I'm pretty certain there were never any factory VR6 turbos. My Jetta has this water pump. If you open the hood you can hear it running for quite a while after you turn off the engine. I assume it is controlled by the car's computer. You could probably run it as long as you wanted, or as long as the water stays warm. That's going to be a function of outside temperature, wind, engine temp, etc.

There are other interesting things on the newer cars. For example, the fuel pump primes itself when you open the driver's door. Also, TDI's have glow plugs that start warming when you open the door.
