Nothing tops the cool factor of a Smart car (except an old VW), but for my money they are too expensive and offer too little for what you pay for. My wife and I shopped around looking for the most compact, inexpensive to purchase and operate, quality commuter car, and decided on a Toyota echo hatchback. I think they look cool, they are way fun to drive and get 54 mpg. Compared to the smart car you get an extra row of seats and tons of luggage space. And with my past experience with Toyota, I would be surprised if I didn't get 400 k out of it with no more than regular maintenance items replaced. Just my 2 cents.
