I can only suggest a rigorous application of prayer and ritual chicken sacrifice to keep those nuts in place. Both of mine were loose when I bought my van, and no amount of struggling from the outside would convince the upper one to tighten. Even when I finally wormed my hand in there behind to hold the nut while I turned the bolt, I couldn't hold it tight enough to keep it from spinning. In a moment of desperation I decided to try the top bolt in the bottom and the bottom bolt in the top. For some strange reason that worked and both tightened up. Hopefully, they'll never come loose again. I'd glue the threads, but think what that'd mean if you even wanted to replace the latch mechanism!
