This is all hearsay, but long ago I had a conversation with a Nissan mechanic about the Bosch injectors in my 280Z, which are essentially the exact same animal as used in the wasserboxer. His assertion was that injectors are a "100,000-hour-plus" part-- in other words, 99.9% of them will last longer than the vehicle they're in, and one in a thousand or so will crap out at random for no discernible reason. Assuming, of course, that they're fed a diet of clean fuel and don't get gummed up or wedged open with carbon or random particulate matter or something, they could probably run continuously for 20 years before wearing out. So yeah, basically they're a "use until they break" part.
