Nice summary Nathaniel,

I recently imported and towed a US Vanagon with my Vanagon into Canada (BC). Because I used a dolly (Uhaul) and wheels were touching the ground I needed the insurance binder. If the wheels are off the ground (on flatbed) you do not need insurance.

A couple of points: * There are several border crossings that you can use and you can fax in (after phone contact) your US papers 72 hours to the border before you plan to cross. We used the Port Angeles border (Coho Ferry to Victoria) and it was very friendly and easy. The US customs just checked their computer and the VIN number, put a seal to the paper and that was it. * Canadian taxes are mostly issued according to the sale price (receipt!). If the vehicle was made in North America (including Mexico), then there are no federal taxes (free trade agreement). * If the imported car has air conditioning then you have to pay an extra fee (can$100). * In some Canadian provinces any out of province vehicle needs to go through a safety inspection that most licenced mechanics can do. When you register your vehicle in the province (after inspection) you will have to pay any provincial tax (on sale price). In BC, if the sale price is deemed to low then you have to fill out another form explaining why (e.g. scratches, thingamagic did not work....). Björn
