I think he's talking about the transfer gear between the two sets of odo dials. I found that pushing the reset button causes the trip odo dials to reverse motion against the direction in which the speedo is trying to rotate them. I guess if this is done often enough it eventually causes the speedo shaft 'main' gear, or the speedo shaft transfer gear on the other end to fail (and as in your case apparently it can make that little plastic transfer gear pop out). You got lucky, obviously that's a much easier fix than the other two problems. Sort of like breaking your leg instead of blowing out your knee.

How do you drill a hole in a 3mm shaft?

The 'main gear' end on my speedo had been repaired before I had to deal with it... somebody super-glued a sort of collar on the shaft between that gear and the clear plastic housing. Is that collar normally there? It's apparently there to keep the shaft from riding one way or the other.
