Roger, pls send me a pic. It could be that we're talking about two different parts.

As an aside, I own a 1982 aircooled and I picked up a spare speedo at a VW show which seems to be earlier. For one, the back of the speedo surround was metal (not plastic like my 1982) and furthermore, it was a screw-on coupling for the speedo cable (not push-on).

If yours is earlier, you can have my speedo. :)
