Well, the problem with Vanagon hoses is that there are so many and all but a very few of them are strangely shaped. Personally, I decided that I would buy a spare of EVERY hose-- and carry them installed on the engine! A somewhat expensive solution, but probably the most effective.

Sometimes you can see a gradual voltage drop before the failure if you have a voltage gauge and monitor it carefully, but without that it seems that usually the only warning you get is that red light.
