Subject: Rear-end squeaking
Content-Type: text/plain

Klaus, our 87 Tiico Westy, has developed a squeak in his back-end that's getting worse. Searching the archives didn't turn anything up.

It started around the time that I was getting lots of vibration from the left rear tire going square and then finally blowing out before I could get it replaced. It started as a pulsing "squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak" when I applied the breaks. Over the last few days it's grown to a near constant "squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak", with or without the breaks applied. When I'm on the gas and accelerating, it goes away (almost), but when I left off the gas and put in the clutch it comes back.

I think its on the left side, since it gets louder when I'm turning sharply to the right and weight is pushed to the left side, and goes away completely when I turn to the left and the weight lifts up off the left side. And the speed of the squeak is directly related to the rotation of the wheels: it goes away when the van is sitting still.

Wheel bearings? CV joints? Brakes? Any or all of the above? :)

I'm headed over to my dad's this weekend to use his garage and tools and see what I can find, but any nudges in the right direction from y'all are appreciated.

Thanks!
