Others have already pointed this out. I have an '86 vanagon. The BTU output from the heater cores is significant. Driving at night in the 20's, starting from a cold engine, I have to start turning the temp lever down after about 10-15 minutes. I'm talking about highway driving, 60mph or so, so the engine warms up fast. And with all the ram air coming in the ventilation system, I'm not even using the fan on the front heater.

I had a '69 Westy with no heat from the engine. It had a little propane furnace behind the driver's seat. 12,000 BTU, which is way more than a Propex. It couldn't keep the inside of that van warm @ hwy speeds if the temp was in the 20's. It was a rusty/drafty van though...

I do know of a local aircooled Vanagon Westy whose owners are happy with the amount of heat it puts out. It is well taken care of and I expect the heater system is complete and functioning properly.
