One trick that helped me getting O2 sensors out was to apply candle wax to the joint when the joint is hot. It seems to as a good penetrant in those cases where you can heat up the parts.

And, of course, many many uses of "creative langauge". ;/ It's quite obvious that the O2 sensor had never been changed. I reset the light as well.

I also just replaced most of the fuel lines. I'll finish that job tomorrow. I need to replace the return line, and all is well. It still had the original fuel lines, with only a small leak (weep?).

The tank seals are bad (I can smell fuel after a fill-uo), so that is the next job.

I was assuming (yeah, yeah) that the O2 sensor would be a quick job. No way, Jose! If it wasn't stuck, it would have been a 20 minute job. Now it is turning into a multi-hour job.

Aren't VW's great?

The good news is the bottom of the engine is as dry as can be: no water or oil leaks. The rest of the ride is also in great condition. I had to reassemble the shift assembly, but that was easy (for once).

That reminds me: I need to flush and refill the coolant system: who knows what is in there.
