My '61 Splitty had no washers--and the wipers didn't "park" but just stoped when you pushed in the switch.

My '67 had a washer tank under the dash--on the tray--at the L end. It had a bellows fill-cap, so you just pumped your own washer fluid. It worked well. I don't remember if the wipers parked or not.

My '76 had the tank to pressurize as Mark describes above.

I'll stick to my Vanagon washers and wipers....
