After reading the original post about this show I set my TIVO to catch the
upcoming showings and promptly forgot about it. Last week I discovered I had
two episodes recorded and one of them was the Vanagon 'LA Surfbus' episode.
I converted it to an mpeg thinking I might pass it around to any listees
that might want to see it that didn't catch it, but the file is huge- about
350 Mb. I suppose I could make a torrent of it...
Anyway what this has to do with being able to see to the rear is that they
installed a backup camera right in the VW symbol in the hatch and tied it
into the GPS display. You couldn't even tell the camera was there. Pretty
nifty.
As for the show itself, it's more of a human interest show than a car show;
they spent probably 70% of the time talking about the person and their
situation and the 30% on the vehicle. I was hoping it would be more like
'Pimp My Ride' where it's the other way around. It was kind of funny seeing
them attack the exhaust system... everything they addressed I was going
'yep... yep... they coulda asked Turner about that bumper... wonder if they
did the fuel lines...?'. Same 'ol, in other words.
The van they wound up with came from poptoppurgatory so those guys got some
face time. When they first showed the lady with her van she loaded in (iirc)
15 surfboards, 24 body boards and about 100 suits, and of course it all fit
(she had the middle seats out).
Cya,
Robert
