There are a number of reasons that cause lifters to become air bound and clatter. A sticking ball check due to wear or contamination. The usual fix is to run the engine until the oil is warm and then run it at speed. Sometimes 4,00 rpm plus may be needed. If you have a lifter or two that regularly does this, probably the lifter is bad. Adjustment is not an answer.

On the air cooled engines, single lifter replacements are easy due to the removable pushrods. When the engine is clanking, shut it down. Remove the valve covers, and setting the engine like you would for a valve adjustment, the soft lifter is easily found. Just replace it.

Yah, that makes sense.

I haven't adjusted the valves (preloaded) yet. Since it's likely air is present in lifter(s), I will do as Bentley says and set valve adjuster screws to .006", to see if that helps. If so, I will preload them. If not, I will take out lifters on passenger side (I could hear/feel noise there) and see who needs cleaning/replacing.

And people, If any of logic/methods don't make sense (the world of hydraulic lifters is new to me), please advise!

Thanks!

Neil.
