They were fairly common in the 69-72 models at least. I and my family
and friends had several. They had a crank handle in the middle of the
roof between the front seats.

The same basic sliding roof was used through 79 and into the Vanagon
years. On at least some of the loafs the opening was the same as for the
poptops but not so for Vanagons.
