Assuming Windows, I would add one thing: "Safe Mode is your friend". If Windows, start in Safe Mode and Windows only loads the essential drivers, services, programs, etc.

Basically, if you start up in Safe Mode and the system is clean and punchy, as you remember, you probably have Spyware and/or AdWare programs bogging it down. These people are not proud. If Safe Mode is doggy, I'd look into hardware issues. Remember, display resolution is low in Safe Mode because the video drivers are not loaded.

Some Virus and AdWare scans won't work in Safe Mode, but if you get one that does, run it in Safe Mode.

I have had VERY good luck with "XoftSpy" for Adware and Symantek's anti-virus is good.
