Having traveled almost the full length of I-40 earlier this year, the only
contributions I can make are:
Tennessee: west of Knoxville to the I-75 South Interchange is always and
has always been under re-construction since '99 when I first went thru
there. I think it's for long-term job security ;-)
Tennessee: Memphis - a good deal of interchange reconstruction right near
the downtown area.
Arkansas: Some construction thru the Little Rock area.
Oklahoma: Oklahoma City - I highly recommend taking the I-240 and I-44 thru
the south & west end of the city, then getting back on I-40 West to avoid
traffic thru the center of town.
Eastern New Mexico: A lot of sections of I-40 are undergoing
re-construction (some might be finished) with lots of two-way, one lane
portions that strech for miles and miles.......
Western New Mexico (Gallup): Be careful where you get off to eat/re-fuel
here. There was an enormous amount of interchange construction at Exit 20
(US-491) and a few the locals I encountered said it had been going on
FOREVER. Getting off the freeway wasn't to difficult, but finding an
on-ramp using the detour signs posted gave me a "scenic tour" thru a lot of
the town along side I-40 before I was able to get back on.
Arizona: Flagstaff: Be prepared for the surprise snowstorm. It's
otherwise gorgeous driving thru there.
California: If you're re-fueling in Barstow, from the end of I-40, take the
I-15 south to the Lenwood Road exit (this takes you past the SR-58
interchange) and re-fuel at the Flying J. I usually use Pilot stations, but
they put this one here in a real bad spot to get in and out of. When
finished, you can head out Lenwood Road west then north to catch SR-58 west
to Bakersfield - alternatively, you can head back north on I-15 to SR-58
interchange, then head west from there, 'sup to you.
And don't miss the Leaning Water Tower Of Texas and of course the Cadillac
Ranch just west of Amarillo, TX.
Hope this helps - have a safe trip :-)
