Give this a try.

Get in a big parking lot somewhere, turn the steering wheel to the left all the way to the stops , then drive the vehicle in a circle, steady at first, then speeding up and slowing down. Go around two or three times. Then reverse the circle. The loads imposed by this manuver will often produce the classic "tock-tock-tock" of a ailing/failing CV, thus clarifying the issue.

John Rodgers 88 GL Driver
