Subject: Vanagon-Eurovan Thanksgiving Goodwill
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

A friend of mine called on Saturday night and said he and his wife and two kids were stranded in Stratton, CO (near the Kansas border) after losing the V-belt on their '93 Eurovan Weekender en route from Kansas City.

They had the Eurovan towed back to Denver by AAA, who incidentally refused to transport he and his family, and got a motel in Stratton.

I took off early yesterday morning from Denver and headed out on the plains in my Vanagon to pick them up. I had a great trip out; I've done a lot of mountain driving since the Subaru 2.2 conversion but hadn't done much flat-out highway driving. I stayed around 70-75 MPH @ 4000-4100 RPM and got around 22 MPG for the 150 miles out there.

They were happy to see me--I picked up my buddy and his family and all of their luggage, gifts, baby stuff, etc. and started back. My buddy was telling me all about what a rough night they'd had the night before, costs involved, etc. as I took the onramp to the Interstate.

He then stopped in mid-sentence and said, "whoa--how fast are we going? This thing is like a rocket!" He turned to his wife "honey, did you feel that? We're already going 70!"

Anyway, I got him and his family back to Golden by noon. And after the ride and the conversation about his Eurovan and my Vanagon, he was dead set on a Subaru-converted Vanagon when we arrived....

Joe T.
