Cary This is a loaded question First that engine 1.9 or 2.1 ? Never add (Change) shims on a used high milage 1.9 to lessen the crank movement The reason of the increase in endplay on the 1.9 engines is the movement of the main bearing in the case SO if you where to use thicker shims to eliminate the endplay you would run the risk of locking the flywheel to the rear main bearing due to the lack of clearance between the thrust surfaces I can only assuume you are tring to fix an oil leak and are replacing the seal for that reason thus the endplay Question. Always countersink the rear main seal on engines with flywheels. If the seal wont go past flush you have the wrong seal. There are two differant flywheel seals made that fit the WBX engine AND they both carry the same part number One is 12 MM thick and the other is 10 MM thick you can only use the 12 MM seal on automatics. Dont forget to clean the seal surface of the flywheel with a fine scotch bright pad I torque the bolts to 82 ft pds and yes they can be reused Alway carry a trash bag in your car I remain Bob Donalds Boston Engine All rights reserved

Perhaps a silly question, but do thicker shims increase the amount of crankshaft endplay, or decrease it? Thanks. Cary
