Usually popping out of gear means the gear itself is wearing out...but... I have seen the rubber boots at teh rear of the shift rod at the trans get compressed in the 4th gear position and gently push it back out of gear...thats why VW increased the width of the bosses on the housing to help the problem...The fix is putting 5 or 6 mm thick washers between teh bracket and the bosses of the case..
