I'll bet that if you look carefully, there is some hook damage underneath. The scratched paint is nothing. I would be ticked though.

I always insist on a flat bed for Vanagon towing. Even with a wheel lift, there always seems to be some damage from 2 wheel down towing. Even with a flat bed, lousy operators can do massive damage. On of my favorites is using a chain connected to the rear tow loops with the hoist chain pulling on the center. The bumper gets a nice curve as the two chassis rails get pulled together.

on the topic of getting towed by AAA, my westy was slightly damaged by them:-(

the towing guy used those magnetic lamps to put on the back of the van, ad due to the poptop, they wouldnt really hold up anywhere. so he put them on the rounded top part of the rear hatch. after 15 miles, one fell off, and both left scratches. one month later , the scratches turned into flaked off paint:-(
