You're going to have trouble looking for a source for a transfer case, since
a vanagon syncro doesn't have one.
The ringing noise you hear is most likely coming from the driveshaft and not
the front differential.  Many driveshafts ring like that when they engage
and transfer power.  It's not a signal of imminent failure.  If it bothers
you, install a new driveshaft and the problem should go away.  Do you get a
pronounced vibration between about 35 and 50 mph?  If so, the driveshaft is
worn out and needs replacing or rebuilding anyway.
