RE: Stranded and signaling This subject has been an active thread on WetWesties for the last 24 hours since Mr Kim was found. A lot of interest because the area involved is familiar to many of our members, it's in their backyard. As for signaling devices one of our members, Margret Nickerson, pointed out that the EPIRB system used on boats and mandatory for open ocean racing work on land also. Do a Google search on EPIRB and you will get a lot of info. Basically a small radio transmitter, the signal is picked up by satellite and sent to authorities with position information. Be aware that there are changes going on in that system and some units being sold will be obsolete in the future. BTW, based on experience discussed on another related VW group in the last month, your FRS radios are virtually useless in rugged terrain, they are line of sight devices with very limited range except under ideal conditions.
