This thread got me thinking about an ELT as well. They're reasonably priced (~$200), and the new versions are much more accurate than the older ones. The unit listed below even has voice transmission capabilities to search and rescue teams.

I'm not sure if it's a violation to use an ELT for non-aviation related use, but if you're stranded, do you really care if the FAA cites you? Better to be cited and alive, than a popsicle.
