Interesting.. On my '88 I decided to try the rev limiter and the Tach spun all the way to the end of the red zone 6,000 RPM and no limiter cut in. I took my foot of the gas at that point not wanting to leave a trail of engine parts all over the road. So I would not depend on the "rev limiter."
