What freeze plug? Are you talking the rubber plug inside the CV joint flange? This is an oil seal. It stops the gear oil that would travel through the splines on the stub axle. Popping out can be a sign of excess pressure in the gearbox or just a bad fit. I now glue them in.

i dropped the transmission tonight and came upon a major tranny fluid leak. the freezeplug had fallen out of the cv flange, and when i removed the drivers-side cv-joint the freezeplug fell to the (not so clean) ground amid a stream of tranny fluid.

is there anything i should do before tapping the plug back into place other than change the fluid and thoroughly clean the plug?

thanks in advance, sudhir
