i dropped the transmission tonight and came upon a major tranny fluid leak. the freezeplug had fallen out of the cv flange, and when i removed the drivers-side cv-joint the freezeplug fell to the (not so clean) ground amid a stream of tranny fluid.

is there anything i should do before tapping the plug back into place other than change the fluid and thoroughly clean the plug?

Sudhir, you've stumbled upon another Vanagon common problem ! Those freeze plugs as your calling them, otherwise known as drive flange seals, are ALWAYS falling out. Clean all mating surfaces well and use RTV Silicone to GLUE them back in place. A light coating over the surface seam afterwards seems to help also.
