I and my friends have messed with enough cars over enough years to know that for the ultimate value of a car, or a gun, or an airplane or camera or steam engine or painting or anything else that will (and this is a big caveat) be measured in some point by its value to MOST PEOPLE (use of caps here is for the traditional reason of emphasis, not for the leet purpose of shouting), follow the rule of the show car enthusiast:

Same or better, but not different.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't modify your car. It doesn't mean that a stainless steel backbone on your Lotus Elan makes it less valuable, it means that putting the Lotus body on a Pinto chassis with a V8 engine makes it less valuable. Right now and near term, a modified car may be worth more... way more. But at some point that always changes, at least for collector vehicles.
