Ok..got it now, thanks for straightening me out. I'm used to distance per unit of fuel (MPG). I guess the Europeans use the unit of fuel per a set distance.
Wow....this means the diesel has an almost 50% gain over the gas.

you got the figures a little wrong.it is Liters of fuel per 100km distance, so the lower the figure the better. the diesel has the much better fuel efficiency.

I went to the tech page for the multivan and was very surprised to see that the V6 gas model got significantly better fuel economy than the TDI, i.e. about 13 L/100km for the gas vs. 9 for the TDI. Anyone venture a guess why?

In addition, VW does not sell the t5 van in a gas version in any of the
world markets - diesel only. Its even available in mexiko (not the
camper though, the van) with their trouble getting diesels emmission
certified, that would be another hurdle.

Not true of all world markets. Here in the land of Oz, for the T5 we get
the choice of 3 diesel engines from 4cyl 1.9 NA thru to a 2.5L 128kW TDI
in the transporter range (incl single & double cabs) plus the choice of
128kW TDI or 3.2L V6 petrol engine in the various versions of the
multivan...the new name for the caravelles/people movers.
And then of course you can also specify 4motion as well.
See www.volkswagen.com.au and navigate your way to the commercial vans
and people movers.
I am now seeing as many T5s on the Aus roads as T4s...if not more. Saw a
beautiful electric blue T5 double cab this morning on the way to work...
