Definitely go with the Subaru swap. That way, if you ever feel like going diesel in the future (past 2008), all you need to do is get the (hopefully released by then) Subaru motor. And if you don't want to go diesel ever, you have a wide range of engine choices, from ones that make a bit more power than stock, to ones that make whole lots of power more than stock.
