Having been born before WW II, and grown up in South Alabama back then, I know all about dirt roads, going barefoot most of the time, and going to town on Shanks Mare - if at all.

Two little country boys went to town, kicking with bare feet the occasional stone in the road, but mostly not. Having a few cents in their pockets paid them by a farmer for picking a bunch of watermelons, the money was burning a hole in their pockets. Comics and bubble gum were the order of the day.

Arriving in town they walked around, checked out the barber shop, then walked into the local drug store to read comic books and buy bubble gum. After reading a raft of comics, they picked one each, went to the counter and got some bubble gum, paid, and started home.

Walking along, chewing and blowing bubbles, reading their comics and not paying particular attention to where they were, they came to a fork in the road. They hesitated, wondering which way to go. In the excitement of going to town, they had not noticed this fork on the way.

Scratching their heads, one boy finally said, "We gotta go this way" and pointed to the right fork. The other boy was dubious. He said "No, this is the way - this other fork" An argument ensued. Back and forth it went.

It got down to this --

1st boy: "You got it wrong! You gonna get us lost! I KNOW This is the way!!"

2nd boy: "No, no no!! If you're so smart, how do you know??"

1st boy : "My instincts tells me so!"

2nd boy: "Well my instincts too, but it don't tell me nothin' !"

They did manage to get home - just before dark.
