So some of what I'm seeing here is people with:

an eye for the unusual,

logic (it really is a useful vehicle),

dedication, (these vans do need attention, and from what I've read, people are likely quite dedicated to their careers. Past or present)

varied careers/skills and hands on experience (a lot of musos I know are actually quite handy. hey you have to learn how to fix you own stuff to make ends meet!).

Contrary to popular belief, most artists (widely applied term) are pragmatic people who see things differently, and try different ways of doing things. Vanagons/Westies certainly are a different way of doing things.
