Well, I removed the oil filter and the oil cooler this afternoon &
discovered that the mounting o-ring was indeed both split & hard. I will
check see if my local VW shop has parts on Tuesday. I might as well replace
some hoses and clamps while I am there. Hopefully it will resolve the issue
for a while.
My daughter has been pushing me to figure out an engine swap. Don't know if
the Tiico or the Subaru swap will be easiest and turn up with the neatest
outcome. Stay tuned......

I don't see any reply to your msg, so, yes, there is a large round
o-ring/gasket between the oil filter adapter/oil cooler. They harden and can
leak, especially in cold weather.
