Years ago, I added a locker to the rear of a 2wd. It helped
but was no were near the improvement that moving the weight
to the rear will do. Limited slip diff's have some advantages
over the locker because you will lose less steering. A true clutch pack
style
limited slip diff. is really the way to go, (like the old 60's cars)
but as of now I don't know of anyone who makes this for the vanagon.
This is a very expensive subject. For any amount of monies you
are going to put into a diff. or keeping a syncro on the road, you can
easily rent a 4 WD for a few months. So your only doing it for the fun.
