I run a VDO vacuum gauge on my dash all the time and my 2.1 idles at
about14-15in. and get to 23 or so under full
decelleration.  Obviously, it goes to 0 under full throttle.  8 is
defintely low and you should find that leak, wherever it is.  Where
are you tapping into the vacuum system BTW?
