Since I haven't heard it mentioned...

The 4cyl VW and Audi engines from the 90s down will fit using the intake manifold from a Cabriolet. A little clearancing is needed on the driver's side sheetmetal, however. Straight bolt-in with the stock diesel parts and can use an Audi 80 exhaust manifold / downpipe for a resonance-free exhaust. This is the way I was going to go before I ended up selling the spare van (no time!)

If I try again, it will be subie or a TDI.
