Professional preservationists almost never apply any kind of impermeable coating to a surface they want to preserve - for this very reason. ANY imperfection or break in the surface allows in moisture where it is then trapped. Painful experience has shown such coatings invariably do more harm than good. Which is why they'll never spray the sphinx with liquid plastic, no matter how much it erodes away :) Nathaniel
