Well, I knew they rust from the inside out, because that is how I discovered the then
small leak, not from the sound, but from the condensation leaking out on the driveway
the few times I would let it idle while I went back to get something.
And I know the muffler wrap won't work, just because of the location right in the bend
where the flange is formed. But, this is #2 Westy (#1 is '90 with 178K miles) so right
now I don't want to put too much time or money into it. So may try the Hi-temp epoxy
or welding, but as Sam said, I may have trouble getting this one off. The bolts are
pretty rusty. I have had the cat and muffler off of the '90.
Anyway, now with the bigger hole, it will drain faster :).

Mufflers rust from the inside out. So the hole on the outside is just the
tip of the iceberg as they say. You could try the muffler wrap as a stop
gap but don't expect it to last more than a few months at the most. A new
muffler would be the way to go for the long term and they are not really
that hard to install. I have some new Ernst ones that are Aluminized and
made in Germany for $149 if you decide to go that way.

'88 Westy, 54K miles, original muffler has a small hole (at least as far as
I could
see) about ½" wide on the cat end, near the base of one of the supports for
the flange where the cat attaches. Any ideas for patching it? High temp
epoxy? Welding? The muffler otherwise appears to be in pretty good shape
with just some surface rust. Thanks, Jerry in Arizona
