I love cruise control - especially in the Vanagon: at nearly 6'3", my ankle
gets tired of holding my foot up on the pedal. Unfortunately for me, the
cruise that came with the van (which was installed soon after purchase in
1987) is intermittent with its functioning. I don't want to spend the time
or $ to install a new one, but would like mine to work correctly, the first
time, it's turned on. The PO simply had her mechanic disconnect it since it
wouldn't work consistently and would even cut out.

Yes, I've checked the wiring at the stalk (on the column instead of a
control pad); I've checked the cutoff switch on the clutch; the vaccuum
actuator in the engine bay seems to hold vaccuum - since even when not
engaged, I can tug the hose off the actuator and hear it hiss; I've cleaned
the magnets on the CV (told you it was an old system) and adjusted them.

Even when it does work - it surges lightly (annoying)... but better than an
aching foot & leg! Any curise control experts out there?
