In '84, the 911s were modified regular 911s with 3.2 air cooled motors and the 4 wheel and lifting suspension added.

In '86 Porsche entered the 959s, with water cooled heads. They came in 1st, 2nd, 6th. Maybe the mechanics were 6th AGAIN....?

Those were Porsche's two years in the Paris-Dakar. I think they just were testing their 911 4 wheel drive ideas--confirming that they worked. For Porsche that usually means 1st. ;-)

The "new" 911 of '89 was the Carrera 4, with 4 wheel drive. In '93 they changed the 4 wheel system to a "simpler" one using a viscous coupling. There--that's the (near) (Syncro) Vanagon content....
