Hmmm. Maybe it doesn't really matter, but if facing up hill, I was taught to turn the wheels away from the curb. This means if rolling backwards, the rear of the wheel will contact the curb immediately (& hopefully stop, not hop).

But probably the most important thing is that the wheels be turned, in either direction, to avoid accelerating straight down the street.
