Hi all,

Just my 2 pfennig, but it seems to me that I spent a lot more time behind my '66 bus, squatting down with the engine flap up, wondering what was wrong this time, than I ever do with my '85 Wasserboxer. I really appreciate having such a relatively trouble-free vehicle these days, but I'm sure that the ritual of push-starting the old '66 - - door open, push till at a good run, jump in, turn on ignition, put in gear and let out clutch - - has helped keep my physical condition above norm. Plus figuring out how to run a string from the carburetor throttle-lever around the side of the bus and pulling on it with the left hand for 120 miles to get home was a good mental exercise. And I kinda miss the excitement, like the time the brakes went 'bloop!' and I was forced to jump the sidewalk and tear around the corner at the stoplight for a quick right turn, rather than rear-end the folks stopped at the light.

I would say that had I had the resources of this list back then, I probably wouldn't have had quite so much excitement, and probably wouldn't have had to replace the engine 3 or 4 times, either.

I really think Unca Joel's poem, The Rules, is the last word on this subject, and everyone should keep a copy somewhere inside the van!

Gary (still carrying an oversize tool-box, just in case)
