Please note, although we used a Syncro, ANY Vanagon can make the trip from Baie Comeau through Labrador and Newfoundland. Highly recommended trip! 4WD not necessary...

You could do the entire trip without ever paying for a campground, (so many beautiful, safe, free places to stay) although having showers and Internet once in a while is sometimes worth paying for.

People in Newfoundland are amazing. For example, we met a family (at Seabreeze Park nonetheless) and they invited us into their home for brunch, showers, laundry etc. We were complete strangers but we felt we had known them forever.
