How is a Syncro suspension any more abuse resistant than a 2 WD? If you don't need the 4 wheel drive traction, the 2wd fine. What can be an issue on unpaved or gravel roads is the shocks and of course the tires.

Joy and others,

I'm from Quebec! I have to disagree with Paul.

Many friends of mine did that road in the past (from Baie-Comeau to Fermont than Labrador city to Newfounland) and they all agree that a 4X4 is required. 1200 KM ( maybe more) of unpaved road could be quite to rough on a 2WD drivetrain and suspension. The syncro is much more equipped to face such roads. Plus what about gas station? The price of gas over is way more expensive than in Southern Quebec.

The brother of a friend of mine lives there (in Fermont). I will ask her to ask her brother as to whether or not the road is still what it used to be. I'll get back to you with the info

As for the Quebec westfalia camping club...most of their members are retired or older and most of them are more attracted by Florida than by those kind of trips! Furthermore they don't have a mailing list or a forum to contact them.

You'll have more luck with the two others Westfalia Club.
