Subject: New Year's on I-40
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Happy New Year All,

I spent New Year's Eve and New Year's Day mostly on Interstate 40 trying to get from Oklahoma City to Santa Fe. I-40 was closed from Amarillo to Albuquerque so I spent New Year's Eve in Amarillo. The truck stops were crowded with trucks and the side roads were lined with more trucks and RVs. The highway was opened on New Year's Day. Traffic was stop and go into New Mexico and it finally stopped altogether for a couple of hours, before crawling slowly forward due to accidents. It was amusing to see all the snowmen in the interstate median and along the sides of the road - testimony to long waits during the storm.

I got home to Santa Fe yesterday afternoon only to find I couldn't get in the driveway - roughly 2-1/2 to 3 feet of snow was piled in the drive after a record snowfall and there was only one lane open in the street. After almost 3 hours of shoveling the heavy wet stuff, I managed to get the bottom half of the driveway open enough to pull the A.B. in out of harm's way. She handled the icy and snowy bits very well along with the long episodes of sitting on the highway. Most importantly, I found it such a comfort to know that no matter where I might get stuck I could just crawl in the back and have all the comforts of home.
