Probably easiest installation-wise would be with a ply underlayment, but I
installed it straight to the pan. The pan itself has metal ³stringers, so
if water ever gets under there it will be away from the wood. I screwed the
first full-length piece (back wall under the cabinet) straight to the floor
through the top of the strip. This one needs to be square as it orients all
the rest of the boards. For the rest of the strips I used polyurethane
adhesive, with only the odd 1 1/2² screw drilled and ³toenailed² to keep it
all tightened. As for the cut ends, you have to leave a gap at least 1/8²
for expansion. I plan on running wood edge molding over this on the exposed
front side, after all the cabinets are installed, and put an oak transition
molding by the sliding door.
This took just over one box (20 sq feet) of hardwood, which I had left over
from a reno project.
