David, When I had my '78 Westy, with messed up fuel injection, I tried the carburetor route. Tried a Solex progressive two barrel setup, then twin DeLorto's. Played around forever with jetting and venturi sizing, and could never get either setup to give the same throttle response and smooth operation of a properly operating FI system. Especially when travelling through mountains and high elevations. I eventually bought a wrecked bus to swap out the FI system, and was much happier. Of course, when I lost an injector hose, the whole van burned to the ground...knew I should've changed those @#$%'ing hoses. One thing, though; if you *do* swap out to carbs, make sure you change out the fuel pump to a lower pressure model designed for carbs. The typical needle/seat setup can't handle the high pressure for long.
