I was checking my throttle position switch for idle, and found it was not
clicking when the throttle was allowed to close, but if I pulled up the
throttle shaft, it did click on throttle close. When the throttle is open,
I have about 1mm of vertical play in the throttle shaft. Excessive? is
there an adjustment or shim to raise the throttle shaft? I do not detect
much axial play as if the bore in the throttle body is worn.
Thanks as always,
Edward, most all Vanagon throttle bodies have that play, it's how they were
built. When I rebuild the throttle bodies, from my _Vanagon Used Parts_
(http://members.aol.com/Fkc43/usedpts.htm) webpage, Throttle body 1.9 or 2.1,
rebuilt, excellent better that new condition - 250.00 exchange or 300.00, part
of the process I do is to shim that play so that the butterfly stays dead
centre in the throat and the valve can move freely. I install stainless steel
shims in between the top of the throttle body, where the seal is for the shaft
and the first linkage piece on the shaft. It may take a few trys at
assembly and disassembly to get the right shims that give the proper adjustment. If
that butterfly has worn a groove in the bottom of the throat of the throttle
body you can fill it with JB Weld and sand smooth, then paint with silver
engine paint. Once you have the butterfly set to ride dead centre it will not
ever rub on the bottom again. The brilliant engineer who designed that
throttle body thought it was a good idea to use the butterfly rubbing on the
bottom of the throat of the throttle body as the bearing surface - ha, ha - that
did not work !!
