I've never used the "big names," but have a free account from a friend's company. Seems to work fine. You can get vonage and skype wireless phones if you are willing to pay the price. Try Skype, at least it's free.

I think most people would be satisfied with the service, caller ID all those bells and whistles are there... but not full 911 service in many if not all instances. You can dial 911 and tell them where you are, but they can't tell where you are automatically. It's the last feature holdout that keeps people paying ridiculous prices for telephone service.
